Did you know that in humans enamel is laid down over dentine towards the end of tooth development? But in sharks, the crown is covered by enameloid, which develops first! That's why you see hollow crowns of developing teeth in this CT reconstruction of a

This juvenile
#Mako#Shark was only about 3.75' long (they're born about 2.5' long). Everything looks more dramatic in slow-motion. So take heart next time you're running next to a track & field star; you almost certainly look more dramatic!pic.twitter.com/kzSaqVjF8EHvala. Friendly reminder: there are > 500 living species of sharks, & while White
#Sharks get the bulk of the press for impressive#teeth, the Sharpnose Sevengill (Heptranchias perlo) has its own set of impressive pearly whites! This is a single tooth from the lower jaw of a juvenile.pic.twitter.com/N7OO5XxkqB

#Mako sharks belong to the genus Isurus (should be italicized, but Twitter isn't run by taxonomists). That genus has been around since the#Cretaceous. Today, there are 2 living species of the genus: the Shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) & the Longfin mako (Isurus paucus).pic.twitter.com/Tz8cMXgD9p

Not all
#sharks are swift, open ocean swimmers. Some sharks, like this Chain Dogfish, are DEMERSAL. A species that is demersal lives close to or on the bottom. And to all you#Scrabble players out there, yes, demersal is a valid Scrabble word.pic.twitter.com/lrLXvBkvk8

Respecting
#wildlife means avoiding unnecessary risks to your safety and/or the animal's wellbeing. Appreciate nature for what it is, not what we would make it. Actions based on realistic appraisals of your role in nature (not phobias or arrogance) will help you enjoy it more!pic.twitter.com/dsApbG3IlY

#Sharks, skates, and rays are elasmobranchs, but what is an#elasmobranch, and how do gills help you identify one? SPOILER: Elasmobranch means "plate gills."

Some
#sharks have pulp cavities that are partially or completely filled with the tissue that makes the root, but not all sharks do.#BullSharks have fully-formed teeth with hollow pulp cavities! With polarized light, boundaries between tissues are more visible & more beautiful!pic.twitter.com/KwzyUoa6If

"Hey, whatcha eating? Lemme see!" "No. Last time you got this close you stuck your nose in my mouth and ruined a perfectly good piece of kinematic data." "Now that you mention it, the guy with the cameras and clipboard did seem annoyed..."

1) Watch video & look at tails of Nurse Shark &
#Mako. 2) Read about species' habitat & ecology (http://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu = good reference). 3) Make hypothesis re: tail shape & lifestyle. 4) Find other#shark info & pics. And for the curious, the dagger symbol (†) is a convention among paleontologists & other evolutionary biologists to denote a species, genus, or other taxon w/ no living members. Example: †Stethacanthus = you won't see a species of Stethacanthus swim by without a time machine.

Anyone who says, "Sharks & their relatives have remained unchanged for hundreds of millions of years" missed something. Think of edestids, like †Helicoprion, with a tooth whorl like a buzzsaw instead of the rows we think of in modern sharks or the tooth plates of a ratfish.pic.twitter.com/p6DFQZLTGE

The Blue Shark is a
#shark you probably won't see in an aquarium, but it is one of the most beautiful! Think about all the morphological & ecological diversity we see in slightly more than 1200 species of#chondrichthyans! And that's not even counting the extinct species...

Kudos to
@NMNH on the renovated Deep Time exhibit! It entertains, informs, & (most importantly) inspires thought! And it features#chondrichthyans too! Check out the amphistylic#jaws of Xenacanthus (approx. 290 million years old). What modern sharks does it remind you of?pic.twitter.com/PpoHZUYTxK

Because the
#BullShark is a euryhaline species (can withstand a wide range of salinities) it has many regional names, such as the Lake Nicaragua shark, but it was not always known that the Bull Shark and Lake Nicaragua shark were one and the same.#SharkScience#SharkNamespic.twitter.com/32T3cPQ3cbHvala. #MakoMonday. Female shortfin makos & male makos are different sizes when mature. Males mature around 6.5' in length & females around 9.5'. Late maturation & a long reproductive cycle contribute to makos being overfished w/ current populations significantly below healthy levels.pic.twitter.com/byqDOwwT7V

Did you know that the genus of the Shortfin Mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) is derived from Greek meaning "equal tail"? The dorsal and ventral lobes of a mako's caudal fin are almost equal. This is great for generating thrust and accelerating through the water!
