Simon Schama added,
It is not the role of parliament to prevent the government from governing by blocking a general election for cynical reasons. It should either vote for an election or have a vote of no confidence. Many people are starting to detest the actions of our current parliament.
It's the role of parliament to do what's best for the country as a whole. The cynical reason BoJo wanted an election is so a no deal Brexit could slip through unchallenged. His minority government doesn't set the agenda.
This parliament has voted against everything and in favour of nothing (except the Brady amendment). We need an election to break the stalemate. The current situation is toxic.
And when you say “to let no deal slip through unchallenged” that ignores the small matter of the electorate being given a say.
So a referendum is essential. No deal has no mandate.
Nor does another referendum.
So we base everything on one day back in 2016? Madness.
The current parliament is in total stalemate. Government cannot govern. An election could take place quite rapidly. A referendum could not.
