Everyone will be hurting, and without the Irish Question, Parliament would almost certainly have voted May's deal through, which would have been to the EU's benefit while they adjusted their finances after losing one of the Big Four.

Going to war hurts - a little short term economic contraction for longer term autonomy & economic gain is not a bad thing

Since there are no guarantees of true autonomy (the WTO is also a governing body with 160+ reps) nor economic gain. Also it has been pointed that much industry could be decimated with no return. People go to war when the alternative is worse. Staying in the EU is not worse.
