Although often interpreted as in the guise of soldiers, a number of figurines of the god Bes actually date to the Ptolemaic Period and show him in Macedonian-style armour - a perfect way to add menace to ward off negative forces

In the past, Graeco-Roman material was seen as representing distinct 'ethnic' traits - Greek, Roman, Egyptian - neglecting the realities of negotiating an identity in any multicultural society. is as much about diversity as it is about death

Our exhibition is about more than mummies. It includes objects that might have had an 'everyday' function in the lives of the living but were repurposed for, and probably only survived by being placed in, graves. Thus is our impression filtered by death

In 1827 the people of Buffalo, NY, were cautioned that "an opportunity of witnessing a mummy may not soon occur again" Well, 193 years later, this week there are 8 coming to town, although I suspect the presentation will be somewhat different...

Spell 42 of the Book of the Dead associates each body part of the deceased with a deity, to overcome death as a complete, divine entity. The text is a common feature of Late and Ptolemaic coffins from Akhmim, like this of the lady Tasheriankh

Papyri highlight aspects of life (rather than just death) in Graeco-Roman Egypt little-known from . This document concerns the sale of a 12 year old Syrian girl called Zonena (named 'Zoe' in Greek), evidence of long-distance Roman slave trade
