Peter C*ffin posting a rant about how Gamergate was about economic anxiety and had legitimate concerns, as a response to the events of the last few days, kind of represents the nadir of this discourse.

So what are the legitimate concerns here, beyond a belief in a general Weltschmerz that may manifest in any old thing, but is driven by- poverty? Surely not that, Gamergaters cannot really be described as poor given their worship of conspicuous consumption.

The term is a general "economic anxiety" that rests on a sense of malaise which is unique to people under 35 (note that someone in the upper age range of that demographic in 2014 is pushing 40 today) and which is linked vaguely to student loan debt and the 2009 Great Recession.

But because this malaise is vague, it can be linked to "not getting wealthy as fast as you want" as well as to "stuck in a string of shitty jobs that short-circuited my career" (again, a consideration that would be less of an issue for the older range of this group).

And this in turn is linked to the pseudo-Marxian "class politics" that is promoted by people like C*ffin, wherein being relatively wealthy and prosperous still doesn't mean that you're doing well. It allows suburbanite restlessness to fall in with poverty and instability.

And it's a class politics which is resolved by wealth redistribution, not by altering the methodology of how things are produced and people are employed in their production. Which to an extent is kind of rejecting notions like the dignity of labor or alienation.

So to a very real extent, it's a politics where the solution to minimum-wage McJobs is not making said jobs better but simply redistributing cash so that you're rich while you do them.

As long as we remember to stress the mob first formed around a disgruntled man's baseless slander of his ex, with the reactionary conspiracy shit quickly adding that to their spiel
