Sad news about Niamh Bhreathnach. A truly reforming education minister. Abolished fees, sponsored the 1st coordinated scheme to tackle educational disadvantage - Breaking the Cycle. And inadvertently the reason I became an educational researcher.

FT style guide change just announced: "data" is now always singular, eg "The data shows that" rather than "the data show that". A red-letter day. I've been tiresomely banging on about this for decades. For anyone opposed, I'd like to know what your agendum is. cc

Want to illustrate how, in the wrong hands, homeschooling can go horribly wrong? I give you Enoch Burke & family. Guards called, thanks to their collective obnoxiousness.

Gardaí have been called to a meeting of the board of Wilson’s Hospital School where it was due to consider the case of suspended teacher Enoch Burke. Officers were called after members of the Burke family shouted objections to the meeting going ahead. More @Independent_ie

I know it's a long shot, but I am beyond heartbroken to lose my Mum's bag. Shout out to anyone working or living in Dublin City to please keep an eye out in lanes or bins for this lovely bag.

Just had my bag stolen in Costa cafe on Dawson Street. I am devastated as it was my Mum's bag. My keys, my phone, everything gone. But the bag can never be replaced.

excellent🧵 about two women, deaths treated and reported *very* differently. Both non-Irish, murdered here in 1996, a few days apart, both deaths remain unsolved. RIP Belinda (& Sophie).

Sophie Toscan du Plantier and Belinda Pereira were murdered days apart in 1996. The difference in media coverage and public interest between these murders was stark from Day 1. Everyone knows Sophie's story but nobody can answer a basic question. Who was Belinda Pereira? /1

Even if anyone has *practical* advice, that would be much appreciated. The DEIS grant,% devoted to HSCL etc is complicated, & hard to transpose to another education system, hence the What Works nature of the Q. Hope the intent of the tweet is clearer now.

Thanks to a DM, I realise clarity is needed. I'm costing a feasibility study elsewhere & want to use Irish experience. I'm trying to estimate ballpark "manageable" workload for a HSCL-type role. Sort of like a min-max range for No. pupils/No. schools. All DEIS-type schools.

Help please #edchatie Seeking info on HSCL post allocation by school size. Can anyone direct me, or give a ballpark guide? E.g., primary school w/ fewer than X pupils gets 0.5 post/eligible school over Y size gets 1 post. Assumed it'd be easy info to find, but no joy. TIA 🙏

Spotted in - the male Mandarin duck (more normal looking female in the background). Looks like a fake duck but it’s real. The wing feathers stick up and look like boat sails. Nature (& Google!) is fascinating.

Panic seeing Carly Simon trending, but thankfully only the 50th anniversary of the wonderful “You’re so vain”. For all the DJs struggling with Mondegreens, this is the line that describes so much so well: “One eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte”. Listen and learn.

Why isn’t this main headline news? In 2023, the DE plans to inspect boarding schools … for the *FIRST time*. It’s to ensure compliance with Children First Act, pub. way back in 2015. “There was a gap there” sez DE person. No 💩 Sherlock. 🤦‍♀️
