My co-host had a great idea. So much of what we do on the pod is heavy - Why not end each ep. w/ a teacher talking about great stuff happening at their school? IOW 60 seconds of sunshine. And it works! I feel sunnier just listening to their stories

Dear ed policy scholars, If you're writing on a topic and all your throat-clearing, intro history citations are pre-1990s...maybe, I don't know, use google scholar or a library catalog or something. Just bc its history doesn't mean your citations about it have to be 50 yrs old.

Standardized tests aren't a good measure of teacher quality (nor student learning, nor school quality). It's good to see the MA Dept of Ed recognize the former, taking long-overdue steps to increase teacher diversity in the state.

So...two comments. 1. I agree. (Though I would have added one more piece: Americans value athletics and what sport teaches. This isn't just about what research "says," it's about what Americans say.) 2. All of us in academia should be copying the slick production value of this.

I'm so proud of our little effort. As I told Judy, I love when people say: "Yeah, sure. But what are you going to REPLACE the existing measurement and accountability system with?" Then I send them to and say "This."

This is a smart take. I was just talking with yesterday about the very selective use of history in this case...

Just had a conversation about why educational research SOMETIMES DOES make it into practice... ...which reminded me of this essay version of my 2nd book ("From the Ivory Tower to the Schoolhouse"):

America's public schools are far from perfect. But while we maintain a sense of outrage on behalf of the marginalized, and while we work to create better schools for all young people, we should also celebrate what is good. There's an awful lot of good out there.
