Of course my #TurrisOmnia received an update today that broke network. Took 2h to reset and bisect that the #wireguard update seems broken.

That's disturbing they broke WireGuard. I wonder what happened. Can you point me to any debug logs or some place so I can try to work Turris to fix their issue?

I'll need to spend some more time figuring out what exactly goes wrong. Self-compiled 20170421 used to work, and so did the last before the 2017-12-24 update. Need to try to compile the latest LEDE package with Turris SDK to see if that works.

Problem is that, if it doesn't, kernel just seems to mirror packets on eth, and only resetting to last snapshot will get the router back to being reachable. I.e. slow debugging/bisecting...

Sounds like there's a lot of confusion and complication and we probably won't get anywhere on Twitter. How about signing into #wireguard on Freenode, and we can figure this out over IRC. Alternatively, send an email with all your logs to team @ wireguard . com

I can no longer reproduce this, #Wireguard on #TurrisOmnia seems stable now (and I don't know what changed, which is slightly worrying). In other news, benchmarking on OpenWRT/MIPS (Atheros AR9344) turns out that OpenVPN with TCP is currently significantly faster than Wireguard.

As #Wireguard is in-kernel and uses ChaCha20 instead of AES-128-CBC and the Atheros AR9344 doesn't seem to hardware accelerate, I don't have a good answer to why. OpenVPN/UDP is equally slow, so I somehow suspect a weird MTU issue on my Fiber-to-the-home connection.

Corroborating that assumption is that #Wireguard/UDP at 2.5Mbps uses 10-15% CPU while #OpenVPN/TCP at 12Mbps is CPU-bound with 100%. (I realize that a single-core 600MHz MIPS gateway is not a good match for FTTH, but power consumption matters as well...)

Try lowering the MTU of the WireGuard interface: `ip link set wg0 mtu 1400`. Alternatively, it's possible your ISP throttles UDP.

I have now asked #EnergieAG if they shape UDP traffic. It would certainly be an explanation for that behavior, but also a surprise if they did. In Austria, I am still used to a neutral Internet.

Problem solved! Turns out a firewall in the path had UDP flood protection and mis-classified #WireGuard traffic as flooding. With exception rules in place, I now get 45MBit/s on a Mikrotik 2011UiAS vs. 12 MBit/s with OpenVPN/TCP (both with 100% CPU). HIghly recommend to use it!

It doesn't seem to be the MTU. Went all the way down to 1200 (on both sides), but no improvement.
