IKEA’s global head of design Marcus Engman is here. He says IKEA is all about building products for everyone, and he apologised for failing the gaming community by not making furniture for them until now.

“Designing the perfect chair is impossible,” Engman says.

IKEA is working with 3D printing for how it designs new products, including the gaming chair. Host Bajo brings up using 3D printing to scan your butt to make a perfect chair base, and Engman says that’s something IKEA will consider.

Engman is great. His mic wasn’t working, so he said he would just yell. Then he got a mic and said “fuck” and asked the crowd if he should start rapping.

Engman, the IKEA designer, says a design challenge for gaming chairs is that there is not one typology of gamer out there. Some live in a big house, others like those in Sydney shoeboxes, have little space. Designing for that is a challenge IKEA is taking on.

Oh now it’s getting good. The conversation is shifting to cable management. Please follow along for more very important updates...

Regarding cable management, Engman says IKEA takes this into consideration with its gaming chair design prototypes. More intriguingly, he said the company is thinking about “enhancers” for the gaming chair experience.

Engman: This may include things that no other furniture company has ever thought of including potentially things that you sit on, while on the chair, and products you could add to your body to “enhance” the gaming experience.

He offers no specifics, instead speaking at a high level of things IKEA may consider in the future.

He also might have been joking a little. While presenting your gaming gear in an aesthetically pleasing way is important for IKEA’s gaming chair, he added that things like this are like “putting lipstick on a pig.”

On a more serious note, Engman said designing a chair for a competitive gamer who spends 16 hours in a game could lead to a product that IKEA sells as a general workplace chair.

Engman says there could be safety concerns about the new gaming chair. Many people are not aware of wattage considerations for what’s plugged into a chair, he said, and IKEA’s learnings for the gaming chair could apply to its broader home and workplace furniture strategy.

Here is one of IKEA’s prototypes for the gaming chair. Right now it’s just butt cushions, and it feels...like a chair seat. Yeah I think so. I guess I have to wait until I can order one that is 3D-molded to my butt shape.pic.twitter.com/2ZICn3kHPS

That’s all for today! Thank you for tuning in. The chairs are apparently due out in 2020, so hold onto your butts until then.
