The difference is that you were being much firmer and more decisive on this pledge than May is. “I expect developers to do their duty” is like me saying “I expect world peace to break out tomorrow. Oh, and I also expect the postman to deliver a puppy to me.”

Yes - I always got the sense Ed would carry out his pledges. I am more sorry than I can say - that Ed didn't become PM. I think we are feeling the loss more as time goes by.
