  1. Elections are a technology for gathering and verifying evidence about what the voters did, in aggregate. We should all be working to create systems that we can all trust. The Iowa failures are embarrassing and inconvenient, but not a threat to democracy. 6/6

  2. The scariest election security scenario involves a non-resilient electronic system going wrong, and at the end of election day nobody knows what the voters tried to do. Amplified with disinformation that overstates the scope and spreads conspiracy theories. 5/6

  3. This is why it's critical that secret-ballot elections use the resilient approach of hand-marked paper ballots with a randomized risk-limiting audit after the election. Imagine if a buggy app were used to collect individual secret ballots--disaster. 4/6

  4. Every voter made their intentions clear, and the in-precinct count was low-tech and public. That's resilient. Of course it would have been harder if this were a secret-ballot election rather than public caucuses. Secret ballot rules out "raise hands and count" approach. 3/6

  5. Adding up votes across precincts is the easiest part of the election to secure. There's ample public evidence of what happened in each precinct. The rest is just arithmetic. Tabulation errors have been found and fixed in manual systems before. No big deal; be patient. 2/6

  6. Some perspective on the Iowa vote tabulation app: This is far from the worst that could have happened. Results will be tabulated correctly, if a bit more slowly than news junkies preferred. The key to securing elections is resilience. 1/6

What happens if you give a genie three wishes that are each satisfiable alone, but unsatisfiable together? Does the genie return an unsat core? Grant only some of the wishes? If so, which ones? Does this differ by genie?

When companies like Equifax & Yahoo send out data breach settlement notices, they use new domains like which ask users for PII to file a claim. It's impossible to tell if these are phishing sites. New post: It gets worse… [thread]

Odgovor korisnicima i sljedećem broju korisnika:

Yes, rebutting a DA challenge is costly in gas, lost trading fees, and a bad UX, so validators get slashed for an incorrect challenge. Honest validators have a clear incentive to raise the challenge both for the stake they win if they're right and for the security of the system.

And if you're punishing people for *reporting* wrongdoing, how can you be sure that bad acts will be reported? Much better to stick to challenge-response protocols where the wrongdoer always loses and the honest one always wins--because you can tell which is which.
