Most of them haven’t actually read the Constitution or understand what it really means. A skeptical view but I’m starting to believe it’s true.

If a state passed a law banning the death penalty because God thinks every life is precious liberals would applaud it.

No. I would not. If, however, a state passed such a law because our nation is based on non-religious principles protecting life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, I'd be pleased. Religious viewpoints are not the only ones opposing murder.

Here are the words: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." And laws based on religion would be precluded. The key phrase is "based on."

There are purely philosophical arguments against abortion, and the First Amendment doesn't mean people have to purge their minds of their beliefs in a voting booth. The government can't establish or prohibit religion. People's views can be informed by religion.
