New department head welcomes our students to the annual Earth Sciences careers event. The first half hour is gorgeous first year students, allowing them time & space to chat to our guests before everyone else arrives.

Some positive news today as well - Mackenzie reports that the CFA processing of the Skytrain core has passed 100 metres (actually 114) today. Meanwhile Rob and team are still working on freeing the drill, although this photo shows looking a bit despondent..

We collected sediment from quiet parts of the river Cam. Use magnets on side of beaker to attract bacteria. Use a pipette to collect a drop from near the S pole of magnet and place on glass slide. Invert slide and view hanging drop on optical microscope.

My fave practical, racing magnetotactic bacteria extracted from the sediment we collected last week. Worked rather well this year.

Today we moved some of our huge specimens into our new store in the Forbes Building with the help of local specialist removal company Welch's. This will increase their physical access to researchers, which we're sure will please attendees!
