    Congratulations Dr Fred Wilson! Fred successfully navigated his PhD viva discussing the calculation of thermodynamic properties of magma ocean constituents. Dr Wilson joined our department back in 2011 as an undergraduate student and obtained his MSci in Geology.

    Paper Alert: High-pressure experiments complete picture of the Earth’s mantle. Anomalous continent-sized regions in the lowermost mantle can be explained by deeply subducted oceanic crust. Thomson, A.R., et al, Nature

    A cross-section through an Earth shear-wave velocity model which shows the large continent-sized low velocity regions that might be enriched in calcium perovskite. These appear as the large, red-coloured slow velocity anomalies sitting on the core-mantle boundary at ~ 2500-3000 km depth below the surface.
