Would love to see someone compare what the average person 'knew' at various times through history. I believe we are still gaining in what the average person knows.

In some public realms of information where the incentives are wildly skewed towards a lie that may be true. Other quiter realms where falsehood is easily detected and deleted...not a chance. One doesn't change Wikipedia for the spin of a boson without incurring the wrath of mods.

Just to see if my supposition was correct. I changed the wikipedia page on the Boson. Was fixed in less than 2 minutes. Kinda surprised it didn't last longer since I did it at 2AM. Mods are amazing.

But we have methods of aggregation for identifying the correct answers. That's why wikipedia works.

With StackOverflow, the ratio is around 1:10:100 of correct:wrong:useless/irrelevant.

Get a hundred people in a room together and they can guess the number of skittles in a jar, but it takes a whole bunch of wrong guesses for the average to be correct. That's collective intelligence.

Truth always has been and always will be elusive, with or without technological advancement.

That is to make the mistake in thinking that knowledge is justified, true, belief requiring an authority to tell people what is true. Knowledge is always uncertain and conjectural.
