Yep - too true. It’s this hopeless reasoning that made the world optimise for GDP rather than healthiness and happiness.

Hey EY. I think you should use the Elon Musk example of how AI can go wrong. (i.e. the AI programmed to rid us of spam does so by killing all humans). While the paperclip example is awesome, spam is something people see more easily as a problem. I suspect it'll stick better.

Robert Miles
@robertskmiles has a great example of a stamp collecting machine which first starts committing fraud, and eventual tries to enslave people.

So not a position on which metaethical view is best, but a position on what resources should be devoted to studying metaethics? And your view is simply annoyance that people won't give you a pass on that, because you think metaethics is unimportant to FAI for other reasons?
-
Nope, he is just annoyed that some people don't see his little but well reasoned pet peeve that AI is probably going to eat us because it is outside of their socially constructed window of sanity. (He also appears to somehow see a self evidence that AI eating us would be bad.)
-
Well yes, but his wanting the paperclip type errors not to happen doesn't seem to me to constitute a meta-ethical view.
-
In a way, the universe is already turning into paperclips. Why is it bad if evolution produces a series of events that changes the design of these clips, and what is the meta ethics that can provide that result? (Eliezer’s take on meta ethics is cute snark here.)
-
Ah so meta ethics can't help solve the problem of distinguishing paperclip-like from non-paperclip-like futures, so that we could design non-paperclip-like ones? But I don't see why it can't. I wish he would have provided an argument.
-
Hey, it's Twitter. Perhaps it is reasonable to expect that Eliezer prefers to use it as a dumping ground for his jokes (and this was a good one!) rather than his journal articles.
-
Ah well.

How are you going to explain to the AI what it means if you can't even make a person understand the meaning?
