Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

If you're tempted to mock early science fiction for depicting Yog-Sothoth as being able to interbreed with a human, keep in mind that before April 26th 1953 nobody knew what the hell DNA was. For all HP Lovecraft knew, that was totally how genetics worked.https://twitter.com/primalpoly/status/989138000473817088 …

65 years ago on this day, Watson and Crick published this one-page paper about the structure of DNA. Nothing would ever be the same again. Except in many of the social sciences & humanities, which apparently didn't get the memo. #DNAday pic.twitter.com/w6pMoF5Eq8

But before DNA people still didn't believe interspecies reproduction was possible, and darwinists were working with the theory of germ plasm that was compatible with some observations (like negating lamarckian evo). And the germ plasm idea evolved during hpl's life.

Ascribing DNA to Yogg-Sothoth seems exactly the kind of human hubris that Lovecraft specifically disliked.

Also note that humans were the product of experimentation by the Elder Things, themselves no strangers to the gate and the key. Also pretty much all life had been farted into existence by the black goat of the woods anyway.

We knew "ligers" were only good for circus side shows. We even knew which sheep would likely yield fluffeyer wool. We knew quite a bit about DNA I think.

Interesting that Dunwich Horror was written the year after Koltsov hypothesized the general structure and function of the genetic mechanism. The DNA molecule was discovered two years later. They just didn't know the structure was helical until Franklin's x-ray diffraction in '52

Another twist: Lovecraft was making @Meaningness's point that we are all monsters. His stories are metaphorical parables about transhumanism.https://buddhism-for-vampires.com/we-are-all-monsters …

I’m not particularly well-read in the Cthulhu Mythos, but from my understanding of it, the Outer Gods are supposed to be nigh-omnipotent beings. So while it wouldn’t be possible by conventional biological means, I would assume Yog-Sothoth isn’t limited to that.

We knew distantly related things couldn't interbreed. Watson and Crick did not give us new information about this topic.

Well, this paper is about the physical structure of DNA, not its existence (known long before) or function.

Sufficiently advanced biology, or dimensionally transcendent reality warping consciousness allow for yog sothoth not being bound by your puny human under standing of how cosmic laws work.

Incorrect, Levene and Chagraff conducted extensive work on the composition of DNA in the 19th and early 20th century, the helical structure of DNA was revealed in 1953 by Watson and Crick.
