Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

I'm more sympathetic to noping this than you probably expect of me. The problem is, lots of people do think publicly listing one positive consequence denotes social acceptability. Until you solve that, a ploy like this could sneakily legitimize slavery.https://twitter.com/egfalken/status/988490277311713280?s=20 …

Article outraged that teacher asked for negative and positive aspects of slavery. Everything has pros and cons, even the evilest things, so useful to know. I'd have noted that 3k years ago the alternative was genocide. https://tinyurl.com/yad2nf8s

I think the problem is *selective* open-mindedness. That Texas school would certainly not ask for a "balanced list of pros and cons" for, say, communism.

I think if you wanted to do this right, you'd start by listing positive features of eating babies, Naziism, and genocide of left-handed people to show how it's done, and then ask the students to list positive features of slavery, communism, and global dictatorship.

And certainly it's not the place to use the term "balanced view". There's a steel version of this that means "use the same filter threshold for listing positive and negative aspects", but here it probably meant "you should have equal items on both sides" which is exactly wrong.

If the public space is to be managed so that only responsible ideas are allowed, are we to be left with anywhere at all freely to think the unthinkable and explore ideas fully?

maybe we could stop thinking about "one" public space, and perhaps think there are many public spaces. And the lowest, most common and widespread of them isn't useful for ideas analysis?

People usually preface justification of horrid shit with claims of "free exchange of ideas". Our brains and the world don't work that way and the propagandists know it.

Tactically, if you are consciously censoring valid arguments from fears of a slippery slope, opponents will highlight inconsistency. A greater good, bigger truth, is why ideologues dismiss valid arguments; in LR better to note and argue they're insufficient.

Sneakily? The arguments are used in modern times. Look at Samantha Sally. Ironically the argument she used in her tragedy was equlivent to that of the safe AGI arguments.

Disagree. It's asking you to put yourself in the minds of the people of that era. Doesn't mean you genuinely endorse slavery.

Agreed that this is a ridiculous premise. The alternative 3k years ago was not taking people from their homelands. Genocide assumes that the people weren't already living where they were taken from.

I can imagine those lists being inadequately opposed and causing harm, but I can also imagine the harmful claims being destroyed by sound reasoning and having positive effects. Is your sympathy representative of your confidence in the former case being more likely?

can you taboo the word "legitimize" here, don't know what that means in this context, what level of legitimization are you talking about? Does it legitimize it to the level of putting it to equal footing as freedom?

It seems like it could be useful to legitimize to the level of reducing ppls priors that slavery had long lasting immutable effects depending on your politics in this sphere.
