Can't speak for all Trump critics, but the big criticism I've heard from people who know what they're talking about is that the DPRK has been trying to get a sit-down with a U.S. President for decades, and the president has always asked for concessions in return (1/)

Namely, some promises re: their nuclear program. This is something the DPRK has reeeally wanted, so for Trump to just give them a meeting for free (especially since it doesn't look like he thought it through at all) is a huge political coup for Kim. (2/2)
-
One more, invalidating my numbering system: There are also objections to Trump in particular meeting with Kim, since he could either A) say something stupid and start a war (unlikely), or B) give Kim whatever he wants because Kim stroked his ego (fairly likely).

Letting trump talk to anyone is bad.

Restating the premise doesn’t constitute a valid argument for it.

1) Sloppy diplomacy starts wars. See: Korea & Desert Storm. 2) The US will gain nothing from this (Kim has no reason to start a war and no intention of disarming) & Kim will gain status, his regime will gain legitimacy, & the photos will be used for propaganda purposes at home.

Because it might work and they’d rather crawl over broken glass than contemplate writing a future editorial saying as much.

1. It might precipitate a war or something. 2. DJT won't read a PDB. Isn't willing to do prep for meeting. Goes in w/ no info. 3. DJT is seemingly compromised by NK's greatest ally. May negotiate against our interests. 4. DJT bends to mere flattery. Easily exploitable.

No. Strident Leftists are upset that something he did involving name-calling tweets might actually pay off. Their minds would explode.

It's more about letting an unhinged moron be leading the talks between n Korea and the U.S. I think the general abstract idea of these presidents talking to each other is great. Just not trump ffs

Sam Harris talks about the "uncanny valley" of talking to people. If you talk to bad enough people, it will be evident that you repudiate them. If you talk to "half bad" people, the burden is on you to repudiate them. I made a graph for you.pic.twitter.com/9qqUO1BRcM

If you're talking about the N. Korean dictator, there may be the perception that talking to him legitimizes his rule and creates the impression that you are friendly with him. Think about it: in real life, towards people you hate you are confrontational, not conversational.

You are missing something. By meeting he makes Kim’s absurdity and oppression valid. And there will by two unstable personalities in a room together, both with nukes and both with poor impulse control. Many ways this can go badly. Few that could go well.
