I have some genuine puzzlement as to what is causing people like Steven Pinker to write an article refuting straw arguments, an angry and dismissive essay whose logic could be torn down in 30 seconds. What's going on? Why is this happening?https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/963950456409088000 …

Pinker actually uses the Orthogonality Thesis as a counter-argument in his article. What he misses is the convergent instrumental goals thesis.

The orthogonality article assumes you can build an AGI that maximizes paperclips, but the article says that the concept of AGIs itself is "barely coherent". Neither article can disprove the other because they both exist in completely separate axiom sets.

It's just a thesis. Not even an argument. How does stating a thesis refute anything?

If you read down, that page contains several arguments.

He actually seems to have gotten that right, as far as I can tell, but missed https://arbital.com/p/instrumental_convergence/ …, https://arbital.com/p/complexity_of_value/ …, and the concept of generality.
