Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

Get quantum mechanics right the first time before anyone has a chance to screw it up, do the same in science stats, do the same in decision theory, and hope future generations remember what I said about AGI. Plus all the stuff that goes without saying.https://twitter.com/ThatEricAlper/status/962188018978193408 …

Prevent the Great Depression using NGDPLT, get the Ashkenazis out of Europe, keep leaded gasoline from being a thing, invent antibiotics and try to head off antibiotic resistance, invent evolutionary psychology before Freud gets too far, try to head off New Age environmentalism.

A lot of this seems to presuppose you have great influence in the scientific community upon arrival. How would you achieve that?

I don't think it'd be too hard to get taken seriously about the Schrodinger equation in 1918.

You could be right, but there were quite a lot of angle-trisectors and circle-squarers going around; it might be tricky to distinguish yourself from them, especially if US scientists knew you were Jewish

Also if you didn't speak German and were used to 21st-century notational conventions, which would seem about as out-of-place in 1918 as 1776 notational conventions.

Certainly there have been cases like Grassmann of groundbreaking research going ignored after multiple creditable attempts to get people to listen. And I'd've faced some different obstacles. This case still seems very doable.

Making me wonder, why the hell isn't there a Bacon Equation yet? I should go discover one before it's too late.

More seriously, if I could just somehow prevent the invention of the excimer laser, and thus the continuation of Moore's Law through the 90s, that'd be even better than stopping nukes. Partly for AGI reasons. But also just to prevent Web 2.0 from existing.

I would start by writing Symbolic Analysis of Switching Circuits and On Computable Numbers. Then I'd do my best to ensure the world's scientists were distracted from looking too closely at the behaviour of nuclei...
