You could rephrase the premise like this: as you've aged, you seem to have gotten better at empathizing with others (even if they're fictional). Is that surprising?

Younger people may not have the context to fully understand what makes certain scenes so painful. Example: at the beginning of Up, during Carl and Ellie's story, when they're shown decorating the nursery, then find out they can't conceive. Crushing to watch it as an adult.
