I had a similar reaction. Partially addressed by WaPo here:https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2018/01/03/michael-wolffs-unbelievable-sometimes-literally-tell-all-about-the-trump-administration/ …

It's a bit difficult to reconcile the two narratives of "Trump colluded with Russia in order to win the Presidency" and "Trump never wanted to be president" They can both be wrong and they can't both be right.
-
Or that Trump lost the popular vote yet rigged the election.

It’s impossible to really know, since Trump is expert at mirroring what his audience wants to hear without regard for the truth. I’m sure this includes the family as well.

Wolff seems unusually untrustworthy even relative to other reporters:https://twitter.com/bradplumer/status/948612001680551936 …

Also, at least one anecdote in the story is likely false:https://twitter.com/GenePark/status/948609661938388993 …

Are you familiar w research indicating that it’s difficult for people polled on potential legislation to believe it is being represented fairly if it sounds sufficiently bad? Is there a name for the phenomenon of refusing to believe something if it sounds sufficiently awful?

Trump has never wasted his time on something he didn’t “want to accomplish”. Typical meaningless liberal media too lazy to address real issues that require investigation, ie work!!!

Agree with
@NateSilver538 . Trump expected to lose and was accepting of that outcome, and so "wanting" wasn't really coming up, but that does not mean he wanted to lose.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Read like obvious fiction/wish fulfillment to me.

This article aside, on an intuitive level this is exactly what I thought about Trump's campaign. I largely saw his candidacy as a publicity stunt, his then increasingly outlandish behavior being an attempt goad voters into pushing him out of the race.

‘Maggie Haberman tweeted she read the entire book. “Thin but readable, Well written. Several things that are true and several that are not. Light in fact-checking and copy-editing.”… on AC360: some “basic details” are wrong… other key details are right. http://mailchi.mp/cnn/rs-jan-3-2018?e=7c1ee49d07 …

Bannon has not denied anything attributed to him, but some of the other people quoted have. My guess is that it is a mixture of truth and fabrication, with more fabrication than most news reporting. While the article might be playing it, the gist of it is probably correct. Trump wasn't presidential material when he ran and is probably staying because to resign is disgraceful and to stay allows him to rake in favors and publicity. Probably also thinks he could be great at it.
