Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

      Eliezer Yudkowsky Retweeted Byzantine Ambassador

Among the conversations that strangely never seem to take place around me is "If we could just eliminate all the meaningless work, our civilization would be productive enough for Basic Income. Why the hell does that even happen?"https://twitter.com/byzantinepower/status/944165275217416192 …

      Eliezer Yudkowsky added,

      Byzantine Ambassador @byzantinepower
In a 2015 YouGov poll, 37 percent of UK respondents described their job as "utterly meaningless".

The study of the "bullshit jobs" phenomenon ought to be as central to modern economics as it is to modern economies. And yet it's almost ignored except for blog posts. Like the pileup of college administrators has to be documented, but ultimately taken for granted.

I think the majority of economists don't actually think as many jobs are "bullshit" as self reported polls. Lots of jobs today serve as risk mitagation for the organization (which is very valuable to the org), but seems petty and meaningless to the person actually doing the work.

We have screwed up so royally bad as a global society that the creation of jobs is actually a good thing. At this point getting rid of pointless jobs isn't enough.

More jobs is a "good" thing because it redistributes wealth downward somewhat. But redistributing wealth is just being robin hood with extra steps. It's still theft.

Specifically: causing redistribution via legislation is theft. This is because the distribution of wealth, at least in America, is a bit top heavy. So we try and fix it by creating jobs. This is a simple and entirely wrong way of solving the problem.

As difficult as it would be to implement, greatly tempering consumerism is the most correct, least pragmatic, and most idealistic way of getting rid of pointless jobs, letting smart people still earn a lot of wealth, and increasing wealth of lower and middle class people.

Do most people think this is a real phenomenon? I don’t. My explanation is that people don’t understand the value most jobs (sometimes including their own) provide.

Bullshit job = a job that's value is not understood by a non-specialist.

The bestselling book "Capitalism Without Capital" discusses this in some detail I think. (Depending on how you define bullshit jobs - the authors talk about intangible benefits etc, which I imagine overlaps significantly with bs jobs but isn't totally the same)

College administrators should be the lowest caste on campus. Zero value added. They just lord it over the profs & students.
