Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

Hey @Uber and @lyft, apparently there's a ton of people who really really really want a "no conversation please" option in the app settings, and would instantly switch away from your competitor if you added that feature first.

Maybe it is better to interact with people in a warm manner versus treating everything so transactionslly.

I hear where you're coming from, but I don't see the harm in giving the option to those people who want it... people have different ways and times for being "human". On occasion, I also am having a bad day and would rather just sit in quiet during my ride.

You are allowed to (politely) tell the taxi driver that, sorry, you'd prefer not to talk during the ride.

No matter how polite you are – uber drivers gives you lower ratings if you’r not willing to have a conversation.

Ironic because passengers will do the same to drivers.

That’s why predefined “willing to talk” option (instead of both sides indistinct expectations) is a good idea.

At the same time, I question the prediction that you'll _necessarily_ get lower ratings if you decide not to make a conversation. Signaling intent using a common/standard social script seems unlikely to result in poor ratings.

I personally get my ratings down when I’m not in a mood (always) for conversation. I use all my politeness to make it clear, but it’s not working. And I know people with the same issues.

As a driver or as a passenger? Because the circumstances are different, I'd be arguing different points, and the original post clearly referred to an option for the passenger.
