The work on this is surprisingly advanced - I understood that if there weren't so much noise from other objects, the local distortions of a submarine's density (not average) can already be detected by the best devices.

I'm sure I saw a presentation about the tech where it was claimed to be nearly practical. IIRC you'd need accuracy of about 10^-13 m/s^2, which is better than the present tech, but seemingly achievable
