But is AGI good or bad for humans?

My mental model of
@ESYudkowsky says "inevitable, really good if done right, really bad if done poorly, and we'd have a much better shot at getting it right if we had more time to get better at the alignment stuff" -
Nailed it in one.

Do you consider massive reduction of energy consumption (with PoS vs PoW) to be one of those trivial properties? Sincere question.
-
...yessssss? In 200 million years, nobody's going to care how much electricity got wasted.
-
I agree with the sentiment, but what if the CO2 emissions push the climate past a tipping point, better to be risk adverse in this situation?
-
I might be suffering from Poe's law, but here goes: "A sufficiently large nuclear war could completely destroy human civilization. If the bombs struck major manufacturing centres, they could also cause thousands of people to be put out of work."

True. But that is more like a side effect of mass proliferation of mining. Most GPU makers pocketing the cash and explicitly labeling their equipment as not intended for crypto currency miningpic.twitter.com/wdjGgY9UTD

Yeah and lets totally ignore the waste of electrical energy at a rate that matches the market cap.

PoW and AGI. What a fictious connection only wild dreamers can think of. Rather than the crude justification, what if the huge cost from PoW can be better used for tech advancement when we have superior tech like PoS. ASIC devs seem negligible compared to major chip devs.

Yeah...the environment is stupid.

then we should support and maintain this Proof-of-Work until AGI is born, saving humanity from roko's basilisk

What do you think about QTUM's being first with a POS blockchain?

What about the fact that Proof-of-Work is actually used in a multibillion dollar real world system? I'm happy for Ethereum holders to try this $40,000,000,000 experiment on behalf of humanity, with their own money. For comparison, that's 4x what (less riksy) Hubble cost so far.

There is also the difference of PoW burning kW/h for no benefit outside the cryptocurrency. By contrast, systems like Algorand that do a proof of useful work could save energy on net.

What about the moral role model approach to AGI? We wouldn't want it spending intractable time trying to solve chess. Hashing SHA256 is a completely useless endeavor yet we place so much value on it. Well, not us, but hedge funds anyhow.
