Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

Postulated preferences & conscious intent are just two very different topics on which one could be clear. I agree we should be clear on prefs; but even you re schooling aren't clear (to me) re conscious intent. http://www.overcomingbias.com/2017/11/preferences-awareness.html …

      I'm relying on the common-sense Cartesian principle that "I THINK I enjoy X" implies "I enjoy X." Though of course "I SAY I enjoy X" doesn't not imply "I enjoy X."

No one is ever deluded about how much they enjoy particular things?

Now that's just sheerly false, Bryan. Human introspection is terrible, and easily disturbed by social desirability bias. If people don't know what they believe until you ask them to bet, why would they always be right about what they enjoy? "Do you enjoy praying?"

I specified *at the moment*. You can be wrong about whether you enjoy praying in general. You can't be wrong about whether you're enjoying it now, though you can lie about it or change the subject.

Why do people sometimes react with apparent surprise, relief, and agreement to statements along the lines of "Search your feelings, you are not having fun right now"?

Example: A: "Are you enjoying that icee, B?" B: "Sure, I like icees. That's why I bought it." A: "But don't you have a toothache right now?" B: "Oh, you're right! Now that I'm actually looking at my qualia, I was wrong to believe I was enjoying this experience. I'd better stop."

I have definitely thought I've been having fun and been wrong about it. You could call it a lie, it's just lying to yourself. *Wanting* to like a book because you've already invested so much time in it, etc.

Because they are allowed to admit, to themselves or others, that they are not enjoying it in the moment. That does not change the fact of no enjoyment?
