Are you familiar with Taking Children Seriously, the Popperian parenting/educational philosophy founded by @DavidDeutschOxf, or did you use that term by coincidence?http://fallibleideas.com/taking-children-seriously …

Why wouldn’t you exert dominance over children?
-
Look, we found the person he was talking about
-
Great and useful answer
In all seriousness, he doesn’t clarify what ever dominance entails. Abuse? Guidance? Quite a dubious statement. -
In this context of interpersonal relationships, dominance means the expectation of control or power. The assumption that one person's ideas and preferences be treated as more important for no particular reason other than that a more equal relationship is somehow distasteful.
-
Well no, the reason is that adults have more experience and knowledge, and children do not fully understand themselves or the world...... It's not hard to understand, we've understood it for centuries....
-
You are implying that 1) it's possible to "fully understand the world", 2) judgment of people's understanding of the world can avoid mirroring existing lines of social privilege, 3) you'd have the right to expect submissiveness from an adult who "understood less than you".
-
1) why are you thinking in absolutes? Try and read some nuance, obviously nothing to do with full comprehension. 2) the adult-child relationship is one of guidance but for it to work the child must submit, the adult must care 3) democracy sucks
-
Yeah, this is both a waste of time and terrifying, bye.

the Other hates you and loves you, because you are made of them and they of you

The challenge is the same of the teacher: how do you provide respectful guidance, aiming at future autonomy. This is a contentious point even for *adult* education — the right balance of freedom and direction for students is far from a consensus among my colleagues.

Few things in HPMOR had the verisimilitude of Harry's outrage at being treated as a non-person because of his age. Only competitors might be your hope for the future, dislike of waste, and the anecdote about being sent on an errand out to a dangerous world.

Only if he also started considering potential-children blastocysts children.

It's a slippery slope.

This was also one of the things I liked most about HPMOR. another piece of fiction that gets at this dynamic well is Flannery O’Connor’s “The River,” albeit more tragically.
