Two positions almost impossible to argue against dispassionately “suffering doesn’t really matter morally” and “only humans can suffer”
It's a tad more than a "module", more of an architecture. And just to be clear on consistency, I suspect the same of one-year-olds.

"Suffering" requires awareness. It's the difference between nociception (i.e. reflexively withdrawing hand from stove) and experienced pain.

Yeah I get that. Anyone who’s seen (more to the point heard) cows grieving for removed calves will know they have that awareness to the max

You're probably correct about the 1 year olds, and the architecture needed, but don't seem to have enough experience with actual birds. :p (Suggested heuristic: only write on the cognition on animal species you have physically touched. Willingness to go pet new ones required.)
