@ESYudkowsky

Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

      Two positions almost impossible to argue against dispassionately “suffering doesn’t really matter morally” and “only humans can suffer”

      Does anyone these days actually argue those positions? Seems hard to believe......

      @ESYudkowsky argues that almost all animals (e.g. cows) lack the reflective self-awareness brain module required for experiencing suffering.

      It's a tad more than a "module", more of an architecture. And just to be clear on consistency, I suspect the same of one-year-olds.

          Okay, so to borrow from Douglas Adams, this must be some new definition of the word “suffering” of which I was previously unaware

          "Suffering" requires awareness. It's the difference between nociception (i.e. reflexively withdrawing hand from stove) and experienced pain.

          Yeah I get that. Anyone who’s seen (more to the point heard) cows grieving for removed calves will know they have that awareness to the max

          You're probably correct about the 1 year olds, and the architecture needed, but don't seem to have enough experience with actual birds. :p (Suggested heuristic: only write on the cognition on animal species you have physically touched. Willingness to go pet new ones required.)
