Imma be totally predictable and boring, and cite Judea Pearl’s “Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems” (causal models, Bayes nets).

This still sets the standard for seeing an algorithm as corresponding to structure in the environment, not as a tool to throw at stuff.
