Yeah. ITT is testable. You make your attempt, and then your opponent can confirm or deny that you've succeeded in understanding their view.
In contrast, steelmanning makes you *feel* like you're being ideologically charitable, yet there's no way of knowing whether you've failed.
You always fail ;-) The question is more along the lines of "have you done whatever is possible for you"?
Also, it seems to me that a large part of the critics are within a framework where somebody tries to "win" a discussion. 1/2
But I care less and less about winning. "Steeling" is still useful for me to discover and understand better (if done with that intent).
