Ours is the era of inadequate AI alignment theory. Any other facts about this era are relatively unimportant, but sometimes I tweet about them anyway.

Insightful essay from @EconTalker on increasing polarization of discourse and how to handle it, hard as it may be. https://medium.com/russroberts/the-world-turned-upside-down-and-what-to-do-about-it-2dc27d1cf5f5 …pic.twitter.com/ZZWk4uVRis

My favourite test for whether I understand the other side is @bryan_caplan's Ideological Turing Test: http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2011/06/the_ideological.html …

A nice approach I read somewhere (can't exactly remember where) is to always strive to criticise the *best possible version* of an idea.

That is, not to attack the "easy" spots but to try hard to make it as strong as possible and then see if critics still holds.

Yes! "Steelmanning." Related to but distinct from ITT. ITT is for understanding the other side; steelmanning is for evaluating it.

People do such a bad job of steelmanning, without noticing when they fail, that I now advocate for replacing that advice with ITT.

Yeah. ITT is testable. You make your attempt, and then your opponent can confirm or deny that you've succeeded in understanding their view.

In contrast, steelmanning makes you *feel* like you're being ideologically charitable, yet there's no way of knowing whether you've failed.

You always fail ;-) The question is more along the lines of "have you done whatever is possible for you"?

Also, it seems to me that a large part of the critics are within a framework where somebody tries to "win" a discussion. 1/2

But I care less and less about winning. "Steeling" is still useful for me to discover and understand better (if done with that intent).
