Silly and tendentious, to be sure, but progress towards safe AGI depends on developing workable ethics; attention to these issues will help.

The hard part of aligning the first AGI has little to do with the details of ethics. Or is that not what you meant?
-
I'm not going to pretend I can pronounce on what the hard part is. But I can't imagine alignment having no ethics-like component, however.
-
.. in the sense that ethics = restraint on / impetus to action.
-
.. further, that human ethics are currently poorly founded and messily documented.
-
.. and further, that engaging with AI ethics while we are slogging through the foothills (both our own ethics and modes of embedding them)..
-
.. will be a valuable learning experience.

Good rule of thumb: if you think "system designed to do a specific task," ML, AI, and AGI are all interchangeable, don't write to Elon Musk

I'm fascinated by people who blithely say "thing X that smart people worry about can't happen" and they proceed on without justifying it.
-
I suppose they're banking on the fact that most of their readers don't mind bold assertions without evidence.

It's amazing how many of these types of articles are written by people who clearly have no idea what the actual issues are

"I, Robot was a farce of a book and a bad movie" Have you even read the book? It's not a cautionary tale about killer robots. At all.

Yes, the article completely dismisses AI w/o support. Not actually seeing how it lines up with the "but self-driving cars" camp, tho.
-
w/o inline support, that is. I haven't clicked amd can't speak to the content of the links. Still seems misrepresentive of the thesis, tho.

Unbelievably arrogant tone of that essay, dunning Kruger at its best.

She cited the great customer service at the DMV as something implausibly replicable by what she calls AI. So much nope in so few words
