Let's face it: the past was a terrible, awful, immoral place. Maybe we should only have statues in honor of the future.

I suggest statues to commemorate mistakes so we can remember them. Some people are condemned to have a statue, torn down after sentence.

The problem is clearly that we insist on teaching history

You can learn the history of WWII without putting up Hitler statues...
-
You put up statues to people who [you] admire. Of course admiration changes over time. Maybe a graveyard / museum for the unperson
-
I'd be interested to see Soviet era statues of their figures. Don't need to admire them to have historical interest. But not in public.

I think an emphatic "who cares?" Is the most rational response to the question of taking down statues.

If only we could figure out some way to teach history that doesn't involve venerating racist traitors.

Tear down the pyramids, the parthenon, the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge. They don't represent our values.

If we did this right now it would send an ambiguous message :"All this woes are equal", said as we take down a MLK statue and a Jim crow one
