If he calls out white supremacists because he has to say that, what else he can be forced to say? It would subordinate him to norms.

I don't think this is quite right. He never calls out etc because his ego rests on never admitting that he's wrong or has flaws.

For the "appearance of power" hypothesis to be right, he would need to be thinking strategically, and I've seen no evidence for that so far
