Fascism is one of those egregious words which is used as strongly as if an entire body of political truths depended upon its existence as a concept and defined so loosely that it is really hard to get 3 people to agree on its characteristics

I think you're right at the extrema. I'm thinking of Zimbabwe: did socialism or fascism drive it to poverty & tyranny? At lower levels, the US (for example) has a case of low-to-mild socialism; harmful, but less harmful than an equivalent level of fascism.

To the extent that the fascists had a theory of economics, it seems more like China than Venezuela. Outside of a war/depression context, on economics, I think fascists would glom onto what seemed to work in the short run rather than dogmatically adhering to ideology.
