Have you read Cummings' own case in favor of Brexit? https://dominiccummings.com/2017/01/09/on-the-referendum-21-branching-histories-of-the-2016-referendum-and-the-frogs-before-the-storm-2/ … -- ctrl+f for "why do it"

That doesn't sound like a Stupid Case, but the Smart Case should at least include a list of acknowledged costs and benefits. If MIRI was deciding whether or not to leave the EU, we'd have spent *at least* one hour brainstorming a huge whiteboard list of things-to-be-weighed.

Smart case seems to be similar to Trump’s trade position. Pain now in exchange for less reliance on unpredictable trade partners later
-
Maybe I should have phrased that differently, because now when people honestly reply with attempted answers I have to say "that's not a smart case", but still, Trump's trade war seems universally regarded as economically illiterate pre-Bastiat mercantilism by econoliterates.

1 It will force the UK to become more self-reliant and thereby more resilient. This will pay off during future global catastrophes. Other interdependent countries will perish when global trade comes to a halt. 2 It will allow the UK to pursue research that's outlawed by the EU.

It is an interesting list of references: note the total absence of the stuff any standard think tank person would have read. When somebody bangs down a critical slowing paper on the table rather than Hayek I also pay attention. Not sure I would bet on the outcome, though...
-
no need to bet on the outcome when this is literally a CTA for folks w/experience like yours to create the outcome
