There is an adaptive response to low-pressure air, hence the practice of altitude training. This invalidates the premise that short-term and long-term effects are similar for any pollution mechanism mediated by oxygenation, which is most of the studies.
Multiple claims that mild levels of particulate matter, under 30% of what's in the Bay Area right now, have huge degrading effects on cognition. Catastrophically important if true. Interestingly, this mechanism suggests a possible role for controlling acclimation by varying CO2 with time of day--low CO2 when you need to be sharp, high CO2 when you don't. No data on whether it works though, and the acclimation might just be an aerobic exercise thing.

Happy I'm not the only one freaked out by this! My anecdotal evidence support the studies on high co2 ppm negatively affecting cognition, which gives me a strong prior for the importance of good air quality. Please keep us updated on the answers you get!
