This is formally just the fallacy ad hominem. The fact that you could always find one low-prestige group out of so many candidates that favors X, makes it extra clear that the argument Proves Too Much. But an argumentative fallacy sounds so much more impressive with N=157.

It's 2018, who needs science to discredit opinions?
-
There was a very recent one on sadists and the tendency to fear that AGI might hurt people, or something along those lines. I tried to look up the specific paper but couldn't find the right keywords. But there's many, many examples in more politicized fields.

1. Make a list of groups and establish their level of General Factor of Correctness; 2. Gauge the groups' level of support for X; 3. "General Factor of Correctness and support for X anticorrelate at r=..., p<..." Argumentum ad suffragium.

The only reality-informative facts of group opinion are surveys of what is believed by superforecasters, professionals, &c. What the low end believes is *not* reality-informative *at all*. Just look at the one side of the graph, don't draw a slope through both sides.

1. Among the sympathizers of X, many subscribed to Z 2. Z had interviewed a known LPG on his podcast 3. People listen to X also listen to LPG 4. X = LPG Now the LPG in step 2 can be substituted with X when attacking the next target.

If confronted about it remember to claim you just wrote about the beliefs of different groups and never actually meant it as an ad hominem . And put lots of other groups in the paper to have plausible deniability. If they still complain say they are against Science!

Character assassination dates to antiquity. This is useful because science depends heavily on accuracy and quick pattern recognition. Knowing a generalized basis where data is coming from is instructive for the search. I cautiously approach AGW science for this reason, etc.
