For a wider perspective, here's the historical outlines of the Gorner Glacier - Its front has been retreating drastically since the end of the 19th century. Satellites provide unprecedented information on the retreat of glaciers, drawing on data from multiple satellite missions.

The was a study done about 100 year ice/cold cycles and northern snow pack. We may be in a warm trough of that cycle studied over 400 years.
