Life may be brutal, but at least I get to hang out with this guy at the end of the day

I started this list on the night Trump lost the 2016 Iowa caucus. It was short-lived.

Tombstone is a mediocre movie in which all of the actors are going for broke in every scene. That makes it spectacularly entertaining. Val Kilmer's performance, especially, is something to behold.

I love to change my mind about things. I have come around on Joker. I originally thought it was derivative and mediocre. But its themes are compelling and stick with you long after the film ends. Only a few movies can do that. So, after arguments with my brother, I concede.

Actors, of course, have every right to speak their opinions, but it comes off as tin eared. Also also, did Marlon Brando start this? If so, as with acting, he was way ahead of his time.

Hollywood award shows are becoming escalating virtue signaling displays in which one rich and famous person after another scolds middle America. The really good signalers also make time to self-flagellate while accepting an award for acting in a movie that paid them millions.

Everybody believes their boundaries are the right boundaries. One step across, and the person is a provocateur; one step behind, and the person is a hopeless prude.

I’m generally surprised and saddened to see many philosophers react to ideas with moral outrage rather than careful argumentation and exploration. The whole point of philosophy is to challenge, provoke, and wrestle with ideas.

When you straw man, not only do you do a disservice to another idea, but you do a disservice to your own, by insulating it from the rigor and discipline of challenging arguments. Without contraries is no progression.

A platform for open public discussion and debate seems cool until real people get on it and then you realize that every half-assed thought you've published is public and therefore available forever to people who are uncharitable or worse. It's not a wonder many choose anonymity.

My latest in Philosophical Studies: "The Structure of Epistemic Probabilities." I explore how explanatory priority relations (formalized in ) help determine the values of probabilities.

An important principle in public discourse: Don't let those who whine and complain the loudest win. It incentivizes more to do it. Instead, cater to those who make calm, judicious arguments.

We built this city is pretty bad, but it's not THAT bad. And I'll be damned if the bridge isn't quite catchy.

According to RS: "This could be the biggest blow-out victory in the history of the Rolling Stone Readers Poll. You really, really, really hate 'We Built This City' by Starship. It crushed the competition."

I try not to resort to ad hominem attacks, but if you like Breaking Bad better than The Wire, then you are truly a reprehensible human being.

What are the greatest artistic achievements? For me, it's probably Virgil's Aeneid, Shakespeare's Hamlet, Joyce's Ulysses, Beethoven's 9th, Keats's Odes, and The Beatles' White Album.

When I was in graduate school, I used to argue that it was odd that the same people who thought businesses couldn't regulate themselves routinely believed that individual scientists could. It's amazing how much of science was just a trust game.
