Blocking abusive accounts is not harmful to “the spirit of discourse” that everyone purportedly has a contractual, sacrosanct obligation towards- it is an assertion of boundaries.

I generally don’t block people solely for disagreeing with me unless the disagreement is based in some moral reason that I consider not to be debatable- but there are relatively few of those. I don’t block solely for criticism- I actively solicit it (see my bio).

I do block: - for being abusive - for bigotry - for spreading disinformation - for persistent bad-faith participation - for any number of reasons I judge the account to be worth blocking that I have no obligation to divulge There is no appeals process.
