Today I woke up, checked twitter, and the first things I had to do was block someone for Godwinning. I really hate having to discuss this because I shouldn't have to, but I sense as I put more content out there, this will happen more, so let's dive into this grotesquery.

For those who might not be familiar, there's an internet law called Godwin's law: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law … The longer a conversation goes on on the internet, the likelihood of someone bringing up Hitler or Nazis approaches one. Some variants appear in the form of this meme.pic.twitter.com/HXgAq46OL5

So, what was the context this time? A brief exchange where I argued that vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 should not be mandated (yet, anyway), but acceded to the point that employers should be permitted to require them as protection for their employees or of customers for making use...

of the services of that company e.g. flying on an airline. Apparently there exists a faction of people who think that this is in any way comparable to the conduct of nazis. I think I can't do better on this one than the Auschwitz museum:https://twitter.com/AuschwitzMuseum/status/1111703636713852928?s=20 …

Instrumentalizing the fate of Jews who were persecuted by hateful antisemitic ideology and murdered in extermination camps like #Auschwitz with poisonous gas in order to argue against vaccination that saves human lives is a symptom of intellectual and moral degeneration.

I'm going to make this very simple for you: your Nazi comparisons are invalid. I can't believe I have to explain this, but your petty struggles and contrived feelings of oppression at something you find inconvenient are not comparable to the atrocities of the Holocaust.

12 million people were exterminated in the Holocaust. They were rounded up and experimented upon. They were starved. They were put in camps to labor under conditions that would be extraordinarily litotes to call inhumane.

Claiming that being withheld a social privilege of some kind because you refuse a simple public health intervention is comparable to the atrocities of the nazis is delusional, vile, and venal. It is shameful. It is also profoundly uncreative.

Hitler's was not the only totalitarian, genocidal regime. Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, King Leopold, and so many others were also genocidal psychopaths. There's even overlap in the groups they targeted and considerable overlap in ideologies.

It's a failure of our education system that these names often don't spring to mind when one thinks of genocide. But you know, that's the whole point. Genocide is perhaps the highest atrocity that humankind is capable of, and you think being told to get a vaccine compares.

My family fled the Holocaust, lived under the oppression of Stalin until his death, and then continued to deal with antisemitism from the Soviet regime until it collapsed and they emigrated to the US. And as nice as it is here, antisemitism happens here too.

Sometimes it's little microaggressions, like when people ask me about my ethnicity and I tell them I'm an Ashkenazi Jew and they explain to me that, no, I'm actually Russian, or Ukrainian. Sometimes it's in the form of overt ethnic slurs.

Sometimes it's because I missed my meeting with the cabal to decide to exclude a person's favorite media from broadcast or decided on whether that would be inclement or whatever other magical propensity has been ascribed to the Jewish people who somehow hold preternatural powers.

This isn't new to the antivax movement, and it's not exclusive to them. So, next time you get the urge to do a nazi comparison, do me a favor: fucking don't. Thanks.
