Today we commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. As a church that was complicit in these horrors, we are called to learn and examine the paths that will lead us towards racial healing and justice.

Large white letters against a black background in the center of the image read, "The African Diaspora: Lasting effects and the ELCA." Around the text, squares of geometric shapes fill the rest of the image. The shapes are green, red, yellow, and black.
Dark yellow image with black text reads, "What is the Transatlantic Slave Trade? The Transatlantic Slave Trade was a 246-year tragedy where an estimated 12 million people from Africa were stolen from their native lands, separated from their families, torn from their culture, tortured, killed, and subjected to lifetimes of captivity. During this time, the white church stayed silent and complicit.

What is African Diaspora? "African Diaspora" refers to all descendants of Africa. The African Union defines African Diaspora as individuals of African origin living away from their home continent of Africa."

Two hands breaking a chain are centered at the bottom of the image, and the ELCA brandmark in black is in the bottom right.
Red background with a large yellow square in the center of the image. Above the square, black text reads "Where are we?" against the red background. The yellow box reads, "Countries with the largest African Diaspora Populations: Brazil: 55.9 million (against a dark green background), United States: 46.4 million, Haiti: 10.1 millions (against a dark green background), Dominican Republic: 9.2 million. Each statistic has an all-black graphic/shape of the country immediately above the statistic.
Yellow image, same background and font as the second graphic, has black text reading, "The ELCA's Apology and Declaration to People of African Descent. The ELCA recognizes its historical complicity in slavery and the enduring legacy of racism globally. We recognize that our role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade isn't exclusionary to the U.S., but has global implications. Because of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, hundreds of millions of Africans have been scattered away from their home, and millions more have been tortured and killed. We must remember that when we talk about the victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, it's not just who we see today, but those who we don't see."

The same hands breaking a chain are at the bottom, center of the image, and the ELCA brandmark in black is in the bottom right.

Today we commemorate the Annunciation of our Lord. Nine months before Christmas we celebrate the annunciation, in which the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to the Son of God.

"Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words of my mouth. May my teaching drop like the rain, my speech condense like the dew; like gentle rain on grass, like showers on new growth. For I will proclaim the name of the Lord!" (Deuteronomy 32:1-3)

"I see God dying in the streets of the Ukraine. The source of hope is that God is journeying amidst God’s people. In the God of life who is present even in the midst of death, that is where my hope lies. –The Rev. Rafael Malpica-Padilla
