A year in Irish peatlands as a - fellow led me to this piece of advice: if you travel to Ireland, you must visit a bog. The significance of bogs and ideas for where to visit in my photo story:

It's World Wetlands Day, celebrating the vital roles of fens, marshes, bogs, swamps, deltas, mangroves, as water-keepers, carbon-storers, flood-slowers, life-makers... Tell me the best writing you know about these overlooked & threatened places. 📷Engel9

(10/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 After a year teasing out the quiet stories & sights from Irish peatlands, I found so many reasons to ♥️ bogs. And thanks to , a conservation project restoring 12 Irish bogs, I have the button to show it.

(9/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 Bogs aren't a charismatic landscape. Their special features can be hard to see at first. E.g. there are many beautiful moth & butterfly species flitting around these wetlands, but chasing them down for a photo is tricky!

(8/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 Bogs are a type of peatland, which cover 3% of land globally & hold more carbon than all forests combined. Scientists use instruments like this "flux tower" in Clara Bog, Ireland to track a bog's CO2 intake and output.

(7/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 Many Irish bogs are wetlands which are no longer wet. Drain systems enable other uses like peat extraction for turf. As a fuel, turf releases more CO2 than coal and, in Ireland, drained bogs emit more CO2 than cars.

(6/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 The big picture is also crucial. More than 85% of Irish bogs are in degraded condition. I found this tiny island of peat soil in a destroyed bog just south of Tullamore, Co. Offaly where turf is a common household fuel.

(5/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 Taking time to look at the small things in a bog, like tiny lichens or a discarded feather, gave me insight into the specialized, complex, and easy-to-miss ecosystem thriving in saturated, acidic bog conditions.

(4/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 Hiking in a bog is invigorating and fun. The sight of a meandering boardwalk sparks a sense of adventure. This mountaintop bog boardwalk led me through Slieve Bloom Nature Reserve's blanket bog in Co. Laois, Ireland.

(3/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 Plants like wild cranberries and carnivorous sundews add pops of color to the bog-scape as well. I found this bright cranberry resting in a circle of sundews at Clara Bog Nature Reserve in Co. Offaly, Ireland.

(2/10) The Beauty of Bogs 💦🌦️🐸🕸️🌾🌈 One of the most colorful parts of a bog is under your feet. For Sphagnum moss, a key wetland plant called the builder of bogs, green is only the beginning. I collected this bouquet in Ox Mountains Bogs SAC, Co. Sligo.

I don’t think this is quite right : “what is at stake as Ireland moves into a post-peat era is more than jobs; it’s an entire way of life.” People continue to cut turf for personal use & there is very little threat to it. Most bogs are unprotected.

Word of the Day: “photobiont” - lichen are hybrid beings; an ancient, miraculous mutualism of fungi (the “mycobiont”) & light-harvesting algal/cyanobacterial partner (the “photobiont”). Rootless, co-operative, pioneering, lichens cover c. 6% of the earth’s surface. 📷2taol & stux
