    It's been a transformational yr for me related to reading ed. It all started w/ 's reporting on the importance of explicit phonics instruction (btw, it's not just for dyslexic Ss) & 's writing on the importance of content instruction to support readers. TY both

    Mid Year testing is done and I’ve gone from 40% on grade level to 72%. The kids made enormous growth in all areas (phonemic awareness, phonics, accuracy, fluency). I’ve been thinking a lot about the practices we’ve implemented this year. The science of reading benefits (1/4)

    “The window for the most effective intervention is preK-K years.” - We can prevent rdg failure w proactive, evidence-based tching for all in core instruction. We also need to *do something* sooner for kids who struggle. Enough of the “they’ll be fine” mindset. They won’t.

    MI districts and schools, no 3rd grader needs to be retained if a parent or teacher does not believe retention is the best strategy for the child’s development under the new law. Period. No different than how you dealt with retention in the past.
