Periodic Reminder: When debugging, you must first accept that something you believe is true is not true. If everything you believed about this system were true, it would work. It doesn't, so you're wrong about something. This is a surprisingly common stumbling block for devs.

If an algorithm has "mastered natural language", I would expect it to be able to do some of the things language is for -- communicating information, receiving information, acting on the world... Not merely output something that statistically sounds like language.

No. That's when you were a child. It's when you were unaware of how messy, complicated and hard the world (and living in it) is. The thing you're trying to get back to isn't a time when Britain was great. It's childhood.

Consider: millions of years ago our antecedents gave a massive sacrifice of their left hemisphere. We lost a tremendous amount of short term memory and replaced it with Broca’s, Wernicke & the phonological loop. But why? So we can—talk. Thus chimpanzees can do this—we can’t:

The people telling you we can't solve the climate crisis helped create it. The people telling you they won't sell off our NHS can afford private healthcare. The people telling you we can’t scrap tuition fees went to university for free. They are not on your side.

"Working with AI is less like working with a human and more like working with a weird force of nature" That's actually a pretty solid characterisation of current AI techniques.

An old poster arguing against women's suffrage. I'm particularly fascinated by outdated arguments for things we today consider completely beyond dispute - arguments for slavery, child beating, genocide, racism, etc. I feel like I'm doing "argument archaeology" or something.
