I’m for peace, but civility & injustice don’t mix. Those who are complicit in racist, inhumane, cruel policies & rhetoric can’t legitimately call for civility. Justice is on the path to civility. “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”

In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington to nearly a quarter million people. None of it would have been possible without this openly gay Black man:

Of the 186,000+ African Americans soldiers that joined the armed forces, an estimated 93,542 black soldiers were formerly enslaved and understood firsthand the nation’s fight for freedom.

In 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified. It states that all persons born or naturalized in the United States (which includes formerly enslaved people) are citizens and are guaranteed “equal protection of the laws.”

Five years after the end of the Civil War, in 1870, the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified. The amendment prohibits federal and state governments from placing restrictions on voting based on race.

Literacy tests, poll taxes, elaborate registration systems, intimidation, and violence—including violent assaults and lynchings—were all used to silence African American voters and exclude them from the polls. 📷: Poll Tax Receipt, 1935

For our country to heal, we must show love to others, including those we perceive to be our enemies. Listen and try to understand. Challenge them. Disagree with them. Hold them accountable. But do not hate them.

For anyone still looking for villains in this story, here you go. It isn’t merely about human error and technological glitches. It’s about voter suppression. The sooner that folks get wise and embrace reforms that can foil this kind of rubbish, the better.

The courageous Senators who honored their oath and the call to do impartial justice, from Doug Jones to Mitt Romney, have this country’s eternal gratitude. Those who failed at this moment of truth will be tried by history and condemned by every generation that follows.

Don’t let this go unnoticed: at least 138 Salvadorans came to America seeking a better and safer life—only to be deported back to El Salvador and killed. It’s horrifying.

It’s not hyperbole to say that we are in a battle for the soul of this nation. Everything that makes us who we are is at stake. We have to get Donald Trump out of the White House and take back this country.
