    35 years ago today, Richard Feynman's paper "Quantum Mechanical Computers" was published in 𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘴. I think he'd be surprised and gratified to see everything that his original idea has led to.

    In 2002, I served on the PhD committee of Aamod Khandekar, a student of Bob McEliece. Aamod's thesis described Irregular Repeat-Accumulate (IRA) codes, with improved encoding efficiency compared to previous LDPC codes. Apparently, this was a good idea.

    My new hero is Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who discovered pulsars as a PhD student but was uncredited when the Nobel Prize was given to her male colleagues. She spent the next 50 years winning every other award in physics and donating the money to fund PhDs for underrepresented groups

    I’m late with this, but geez, what a big decade the 2010s were for science. We got: the Higgs boson, CRISPR, gravitational waves, deep learning, quantum computers, 1000s of exoplanets, black hole photo. Looking at you, 2020s.

    We specifically show 2D quantum Hall physics in a single photonic cavity. This is enabled by harnessing various intrinsic properties of light such as its color (frequency) and direction of propagation (pseudo-spin).
