I am really excited to finally be able to publish this. We are running the FOSS Contributor Fund again in 2020. And we want you to run one too.

An older woman came into the bookstore today. I made a joke about a credit card reader issue and she said "these things are all programmed by twenty-five-year-old boys who don't comment their code" and somehow we ended up having a great conversation about programming and biases.

I'm kind of enchanted. Shades of Willie Wonka's elevator.

It... makes no sense. I think this is a case where spending your entire career outside of the for-profit world limits your knowledge. But he could have, to your point, asked someone.

This point stuck out to me too. I've worked in more companies where there were embedded trolls than I have FOSS communities with trolls, honestly, because it's easier to pick and choose your FOSS community than your job. Mostly because FOSS usually doesn't pay wages I depend on.

And like - I know the dude says stuff to get a rise out of people? But there is being controversial, and then there is just being plain, straight-up wrong.

In conclusion: if you want to learn about inner source, I do not recommend that you listen to the observations of someone who takes the position that all proprietary software is bad. Go to Join their community. They would love to talk to you. 19/

I would be shocked to find out that Bradley talked to anyone who had worked on or in an inner source program to validate any of his assumptions or his premise. I encourage him to attend the next summit in Madrid, and spend some time learning about it. 18/

Bradley’s proposal is that open source programs offices should not support - The alternative, Bradley, is that we not support it, and instead not teach people how to work together more effectively. In short: I call bullshit. 17/

That path may lead them to becoming part of something bigger than themselves, or it may just make them easier to collaborate with. Both of these are wins. 16/

By adopting collaboration best practices from the foss community and applying them to how companies develop proprietary software, we teach people how to work together in ways they would not otherwise learn. We expose them to a culture we share and put them on the path. 15/

Bradley’s conclusion is fundamentally meaningless, and simultaneously completely wrong. It’s hard to get both of those in one go, but there it is. 14/

There are many things wrong with this take, but I will pick just one of them. The exact inverse of this position is also true - we won’t know for 10-20 years what kind of impact inner source could have had on the foss community, and by then it will be too late to start. 13/

Problem 4 - Bradley’s conclusion is that we won’t know for 10-20 years what kind of impact inner source had on the foss community, and by then it will be too late to mitigate the damage done. Therefore, he states, open source programs offices should not support inner source. 12/

And B - this ignores the work of the entire community, who have been diligently sharing their learnings, tools, best practices, and experiences in an effort to open up stronger collaboration between individuals within organizations. 11/

Problem 3: Bradley assets that because inner source is largely driven on GitHub’s proprietary platform, it really only enables the proliferation of proprietary software. A - this ignores the significant role that Gitlab plays in the enterprise space. 10/

So no, Bradley, HR does not protect you from trolls. That is fundamentally false. And dangerous. Hands up if you’ve ever lost the fight on a. HR complaint regarding a colleague who behaved inappropriately but kept their job because they were too important to lose. 🤚 9/

Recently a friend related a story where they had a chair thrown at them because the chair-thrower’s badge wasn’t working. My friend was not responsible for facilities or office management. The chair-thrower kept there job because “he’s a brilliant engineer.” 8/
